General Information: Ohio’s law enforcement agencies have felt the effects of the economy in the form of position eliminations, combination of positions (such as SRO and D.A.R.E.) and decreased training budgets. Chiefs and sheriffs have indicated that their departments no longer have the training dollars to send their SRO and/or D.A.R.E. officer(s) to two separate conferences a year and requested that OSROA and DAO combine their resources to offer one conference for school-based law enforcement. To address this request, in 2011 the first Combined Conference week was held. The second Combined Conference will take place in June 2012 at the Maumee Bay Resort.

Dynamic educational sessions on important school-based policing topics will be presented in general session format over a three day period. Presentations include:  Rachel’s Challenge,  2012 School Law Update (Bernard James, Professor of Law, Pepperdine University), Autism Awareness In Schools (SRO Steve Burgess), and Rx/Drug Awareness/Abuse in Schools (Jesse Wimberly, Agent Ohio State Board of Pharmacy). Also part of the conference format is the Community Service Project and D.A.R.E. Car Show/Awards.

In addition, training on the new D.A.R.E. America mandated  keepin’ it REAL elementary school curriculum is scheduled on Tuesday afternoon for Certified D.A.R.E. Officers. (the Conference will conclude for all other attendees before the beginning of the keepin’ it REAL training).

**Important to note for Tuesday: All Conference sessions with the exception of the D.A.R.E.  keepin’ it REAL New Elementary Curriculum Training will conclude before lunch on Tuesday. The Tuesday lunch is also the DARE Association of Ohio Awards/Swearing-In Banquet. On the registration form you will be asked to indicate if you will stay for the Banquet  or if you prefer to take a boxed lunch (same great food as the Banquet attendees will have!) with you and not attend the Banquet. All Conference Attendees are invited and encouraged to stay for the Banquet. The boxed lunch option is provided for those who would prefer to skip a formal lunch in order to “get on the road” as early as possible. For planning purposes, once you make your selection of “Stay for the Tuesday Banquet” or “Please Box My Tuesday Lunch” we will ask that you stick to that decision.

The compact conference format is designed to lower the attendee’s expenses and their time away from home and work while still providing valuable training and an opportunity to network with both school-based police officers and school personnel. The “bundle” registration fee covers overnight accomodations (a non-overnight package is also available), meals, breaks, conference materials, one year DAO and/or OSROA free membership, a conference t-shirt and door prizes and should lessen administrative paperwork for your department.

Bring the family! There is plenty to do in and around Maumee Bay State Park to both keep your family entertained while you attend the education sessions and for you to do with your family during free time. If you plan to spend the night before or after the conference dates, please call Amy Boyer (419.836.0009 important you speak with Amy) at Maumee Bay and mention you are with the D.A.R.E./SRO group so you will receive a special room rate.
