General Information for all location
In 2008, the Operation Street Smart program will include both Drug and Gang Education components. The Franklin County Sheriff’s Office created Operation: Street Smart in July 2002 as a way to take community oriented policing to a new level. Street Smart is a collaborative effort between the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) and the Community Relations Division. To date, the drug education component of Operation: Street Smart has been presented over 500 times to over 50,000 people throughout Ohio and the United States. In May 2004, the program received the F.B.I. Director’s Community Leadership Award.
The goal of the Drug Education portion of Street Smart is to provide current and up-to-date narcotics information on trends, terminology, paraphernalia, and physiological effects to those individuals who deal with today’s youth on a daily basis. The Gang Education portion concentrates on recognizing gangs and gang activity in school communities, how these gangs affect children and what SROs and school administrators can do to combat these gang activities in their areas.

One Day Curriculum
Examples of current designer street drugs such as XTC, AMT, 5-Meo-DMT, LSD, GHB, 1-4 Butanediol, Ketamine, and Khat will be presented. Franklin County Sheriff Deputies will escort the examples throughout the audience for hands on effect.
Current drug paraphernalia examples will be available to depict the ease in camouflaging drug use from adults. A strong emphasis is placed on the physiological effects of the drugs and indicators to look for. So-called “traditional” drugs such as marijuana, cocaine, crack, heroin, and methamphetamine are also covered extensively as teenagers still heavily abuse these drugs.
The Adult Gang Education portion of the program is designed to educate parents, teachers, social workers, community partners, and anyone with a nexus to children about current gang trends, terminology, culture, and media influences. Included is a history of gangs, a breakdown of the different types of gangs and threat groups and their criminal activities.
At the conclusion of the training program participants will be able to better identify gang activity in their schools and communities, and will be empowered to help combat this growing problem.
